In the last issue, I told you about the decluttering of dishes process I had started, using the Marie Condo’s method called The Art of Decluttering. Marie is the Japanese author that made this process popular on Netflix, in magazines, and in newspapers.
The final, and most difficult, decluttering area for me was the books, papers, notebooks, etc.
We stopped the decluttering process after this area for now but, there is one more area that I have to tackle which are souvenirs, knick knacks and memory-related items. We will revisit this area after my daughter graduates from college and comes home to help me.
I am a book hoarder, no ifs, ands, or buts about it! I love books, magazines, and notebooks of continuing education courses I have taken, audio courses and anything else that might be a reference to learning.
First step was, of course, collecting everything scattered around the house into one central location. We went through and identified doubles, outdated books, and books and magazines that I didn’t want and placed them into a donation pile.
I then scanned and logged the books into my app of the year, “Book Buddy”. Check it out on the app store. This app allows you to scan the bar code of your book and it automatically saves the picture of the book cover, synopsis, genre, etc. in alphabetical order. It is truly amazing. It is free for 50 books and only $4.99 one time for more books. We then used this app to place the books back on my shelves into subject and in alphabetical order. The app even has a spot to mark what book you lent out, to whom, and the date.
This declutter process has been rejuvenating and energizing. In a way, it has set me “free.” There is more work to do, but this was an amazing start.
